Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center, the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine and the University of Cincinnati Medical Center have made a five-year commitment to invest up to $60 million to form the Cincinnati Cancer Center, a joint cancer program in southern Ohio. The joint effort seeks to coordinate life-long oncology care and combine the scientific and intellectual resources necessary to produce internationally significant research.
The Cincinnati Cancer Center includes 142 College of Medicine faculty members residing at UC and Cincinnati Children’s who currently hold about $32 million in cancer-related grants. Research will be organized into four primary scientific groups—involving basic and translational scientists as well as clinicians. With a commitment to research in experimental hematology, cancer and gene therapy, Cincinnati Children’s division of experimental hematology’s goal is to understand the biology of blood cell formation and function and to use this knowledge I the development of innovative treatments of genetic and acquired diseases affecting the blood system and cancer. Basic research includes programs in stem cell biology, molecular and gene therapy, leukemia biology, cell signaling and cancer biology.
