UC Physician Named as One of The Cincinnati Enquirer's "Women of the Year"

Cincinnati—The Cincinnati Enquirer has named Evelyn V. Hess, MD, MACP, professor of immunology in the University of Cincinnati (UC) College of Medicine, Department of Internal Medicine, as one of the ten "Women of the Year" for 1999. The annual Women of the Year are selected from hundreds of nominations entered to celebrate the work of local women who are ambassadors for almost every person and community cause in Greater Cincinnati. Hess, a Master of the American College of Rheumatology (ACR) and McDonald professor of medicine at the UC College of Medicine, received a Mastership from the American College of Physicians (ACP) for her distinguished contributions to internal medicine last year. In April, Hess will begin her four-year term as ACP governor for Ohio. The ACP is the major organization for internists in the United States, and it is involved in education activities as well as monitoring and improving patient care.

Hess is a member of the UC College of Medicine's committee on house staff selection and evaluation. Throughout her career, she has served on 100 other committees including the Greater Cincinnati AIDS Task Force. She has also received the UC Oscar Schmidt Public Service Award and served as chairman of the Cincinnati Board of Health finance committee. Hess was a member of the Greater Cincinnati Racial Tolerance Task Force and the Cincinnati-Kharkiv Sister Cities Project.

In 1996, Hess received the Distinguished Rheumatologist Award from the national American College of Rheumatology Nominating Committee for her outstanding contributions to science that benefit patients with rheumatic diseases. Hess was director of Immunology at the UC College of Medicine from 1965 to 1995. She is an internationally recognized physician, teacher, and scientist with particular expertise in systemic lupus, autoimmunity, and arthritis management. A native of Dublin, Ireland, Hess now calls Cincinnati her home.

Chairwoman of the Rheumatology-Clinical Immunology Expert Advisory panel of the United States Pharmacopeia until the year 2000, Hess has received numerous awards for her lifetime of achievements which have led to a greater understanding of immunology and the autoimmune diseases. She has been listed as one of the country's "best doctors" in the 1999 edition of the Best Doctors in America, Town and Country, Harper's Bazaar, and Good Housekeeping magazines and is listed in the Who's Who Directory in the "American Men and Women of Science."
