Cancer Survivor's Day

CincinnatióNational Cancer Survivor's Day is being celebrated this year with a "Festival of Life" riverboat cruise on the Ohio River. Four riverboats from BB Riverboat Cruises will sail down the river on the afternoon of Sunday, June 6, with 800 cancer survivors, oncologists, family members, and friends. Guests will enjoy food, entertainment, and beautiful scenery during the two-hour cruise. "We want to emphasize to our community that cancer is a survivable disease, and hundreds of Greater Cincinnati cancer survivors celebrate life together each year at this annual event," says Terry Boys, chair of this year's cancer survivor's planning committee and regional director of oncology for Mercy Health Partners of Southwest Ohio.

The celebration begins with music provided by the New Richmond school band at 12:30 p.m. At 1:00 p.m. passengers will board the boats at Covington Landing, and souvenir photos will be taken. The cruise includes a captain's commentary on the history of riverboating, a sing-along, banjo players, and prize drawings. Local celebrity guests include: WCPO-TV medical reporter Bill Price, Metro helicopter traffic reporter Ted Florko, Cincinnati Enquirer columnist Laura Pulfer, Cincinnati journalist Camilla Warrick, and Krueger the search and rescue dog from South Bend, Indiana, who is a cancer survivor himself. All of the celebrities except medical reporter Bill Price are cancer survivors. A buffet lunch will be served at 2:00 p.m. and the boats will return to the docks at 4:00 p.m.

The presenting sponsors of this year's "Festival of Life" are: the Health Alliance, Mercy Health Partners, and TriHealth. "Major healthcare providers and community-oriented business leaders work together each year to make Cincinnati's Cancer Survivor's Day a successful event," says Boys.

Other contributors to this year's event include: Amgen, Dearborn County Hospital, Genetics Institute, St. Elizabeth Medical Center, Children's Hospital Medical Center, Schering Oncology Biotech, the American Cancer Society, Cancer Family Care, and Merck & Co., Inc.
