As one of his first official duties as pharmacy dean, Neil MacKinnon, PhD, welcomed 97 first-year PharmD students to the University of Cincinnati’s James L. Winkle College of Pharmacy at the college’s 2013 White Coat Ceremony Aug. 23.
In his speech to the student body, the dean emphasized the significance of wearing the white coat, imprinted with the seal of the college: "The white coat is only a symbol, but it is a powerful one. It is a symbol of altruism – putting the needs of others before you own. Far more important than the white coat itself is the professionalism and attitude of the individual who wears it.
Members of the class of 2017 received their undergraduate education at 38 different universities and colleges across the country, with 60 percent obtaining their pre-pharmacy education from UC.
Third-year PharmD student and tribunal student government President Caroline Barone also addressed the class.
”Our students are looking forward to the next four years of their pharmacy education with enthusiasm, dedication and respect as stated in their class creed,” says Andrea Wall, associate dean for academic affairs.
Honored guests included Kevin Mitchell, RPh, president, Ohio Board of Pharmacy; Ernie Boyd, PharmD(Honorary), CAE, executive director the Ohio Pharmacists Association; Robert Parsons, RPh, executive director, Ohio Society of Health Systems Pharmacists; and Norb Kinross, PharmD, co-president of the Winkle College Alumni Council.
