Alexander Appointed to Altemeier Chair

Cincinnati—The Department of Surgery recently appointed J. Wesley Alexander, MD, chief of the Division of Immunology, to the Altemeier Chair. This position was created in honor of William A. Altemeier, MD, long-time Christian R. Holmes Professor of Surgery and chairman of the Department of Surgery from 1952 to 1978. Altemeier and Alexander helped to found the Surgical Infection Society of which both served as president.

Alexander has an international reputation in the field of surgery and is one of the few surgeons who has worked in three different areas of specialty (surgical infection, burns, and transplantation). He has been honored for this achievement by being president of all three of these surgical organizations, including the Surgical Infection Society, the American Burn Association, and the American Transplant Society. Alexander has received numerous awards, such as the Allen Medal of the American Burn Association, and his discoveries in this field have changed the way burns are treated. Alexander has been one of the few surgeons who has been funded consistently for 30 years by the NIH, and he is currently investigating dietary modifications of transplant rejection.
