UC Professor Accepts Membership on NIH Center for Scientific Review

Cincinnati--James A. Fagin, MD, professor and director of the University of Cincinnati (UC) Department of Endocrinology, has accepted an invitation to serve as a member of the Endocrinology Study Section of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Center for Scientific Review. Fagin began his term on July 1, 1998, and will serve in the study section until June 30, 2002.

Fagin was chosen by members already serving on the Endocrinology Study Section who review research accomplishments, journal publications, honors received, objectivity levels, and teamwork capabilities. "Usually those who've already received consistent funding from the NIH will be considered," Fagin says. "You are asked to become a regular member after the members review your work and your reputation."

Membership on a study session represents a major commitment of professional time and energy. Study section members review grant applications submitted to the NIH, make recommendations on the applications, and survey the status of research in their fields of science.

"Serving as a member of the study section requires a tremendous amount of effort and work," Fagin says, "but the position also provides the opportunity to learn and to understand the new research that is being conducted."
