Women's Health Program Receives Award

Cincinnati--The Women's Health Program at the University of Cincinnati (UC) College of Medicine has received $13,000 from the Alpha Phi Foundation (the philanthropy of the Alpha Phi Fraternity for women) for their 2000 Cardiac Care Award. In support of recognizing the gender differences in diagnosing and treating cardiac health problems, the award was given to the UC Women's Health Program and the UC Curriculum Committee on Women's Health and Gender-based Medicine to develop a Medical Student Guide to Gender-specific Cardiovascular Health and Disease.

The guide will be available via the UC Women's Health web site for use by medical students and faculty, and will include:

  • cardiac risk factors for men and women with special attention to age, race, and culture
  • heart disease prevention strategies for women and men
  • patient interview questions assuring students incorporate an understanding of behavioral issues
  • questions specific to each basic science course (anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, pharmacology, etc.) eliciting additional information regarding salient gender differences in the cardiovascular system
  • self-administered tests for students to check their learning
  • select additional resources including useful web sites
