UC Pharmacy Professors Author Pharmacy History Book

Cincinnati--Michael Flannery, PhD and Dennis Worthen, PhD, adjunct professors at the University of Cincinnati (UC) College of Pharmacy, authored a new book titled Pharmaceutical Education in the Queen City: 150 Years of Service. The book details the pharmaceutical history of Cincinnati originating at UC. Throughout the 2000-2001 academic year, the College of Pharmacy marked its 150th anniversary with activities to commemorate its history.

"This book was a major activity of the sesquicentennial celebration which will culminate with graduation in June," said Daniel Acosta, PhD, professor and dean of the UC College of Pharmacy.

The college can boast many achievements during the past year. The faculty generated nearly $2 million in competitive research grants, the college implemented a new PharmD program and received accreditation, and students earned a 100 percent pass rate on the licensure exam, just to name a few of the most significant.

"This book is a must-read for anyone interested in pharmaceutical education," said Robert A. Buerki, PhD, professor of the Division of Pharmacy Practice and Administration at The Ohio State University College of Pharmacy. "It is a welcome addition to the libraries of all universities and colleges of pharmacy."

In the book, readers can learn about German influence on pharmacy standards, 19th century careers opportunities in the pharmaceutical industry for women, World War I and II demands on emergency pharmaceuticals and high technology shaping the future of pharmacy education.

"The book is an exemplary model of what an institutional history should be," said Ernst W. Stieb, PhD, professor emeritus from the University of Toronto and one of the book reviewers. "The authors exhibit a talent for weaving their story about the establishment and development of pharmaceutical education in Cincinnati. This is no mere chronicle of a single entity, but a full-blown account taking all influences into consideration."

A book signing will take place at the UC Main Bookstore on Saturday, May 5 from 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m. The books are available in hard copy and cost $49.95 each. There are additional charges of $4.95 for shipping and handling and $3 sales tax for Ohio residents. The proceeds will fund student scholarships and college programs at UC. Order forms are posted on the College of Pharmacy's Web site at http://pharmacy.uc.edu. Call 1-888-BEARCAT to place a phone order. Payment may be made by credit card (Visa, MasterCard or Discover) or checks made payable to the University of Cincinnati and sent to UC Bookstores, P.O. Box 210009, Cincinnati, Ohio 45221-0009.
