Pharmacy Dean Appointed Chair of FDA Advisory Board

Cincinnati--Daniel Acosta, Jr., PhD, professor and dean of the University of Cincinnati (UC) College of Pharmacy, will serve as the new chair of the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Science Advisory Board to the National Center for Toxicological Research (NCTR).

The board ensures that research programs at NCTR laboratories are scientifically sound and pertinent.

"I believe the Science Advisory Board consists of many fine toxicologists who will provide sound advice to the NCTR for its mission examining the biological effects of potentially toxic substances in animals and humans," Acosta said.

As the chair, Acosta will oversee the advisory board to the NCTR and the Offices of Regulatory Affairs operated by the FDA.

"It is very important that regulatory agencies, such as the FDA, base their decisions on good science," Acosta said. "It is also fundamental for FDA scientists to have the opportunity to interact with non-government scientists to have the most up-to-date scientific findings in toxicology and other disciplines."

Acosta has been the dean of the UC College of Pharmacy since 1996. He is a member of many distinguished organizations, including the Board of Scientific Counselors for the Environmental Protection Agency, the American Society for Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics, the Society for In Vitro Biology and the United States Pharmacopoeia Expert Committee on Toxicology and Biocompatibility. He is also the immediate past president of the Society of Toxicology.
