new chair of the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA)

biological effects of potentially toxic substances in animals and
humans," Acosta said.
As the chair, Acosta will oversee the advisory board to the NCTR and the Offices of Regulatory Affairs operated by the FDA.

Acosta has been the dean of
the UC College of Pharmacy since 1996. He is a member of many
distinguished organizations, including the Board of Scientific
Counselors for the Environmental Protection Agency, the American
Society for Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics, the Society for
In Vitro Biology and the United States Pharmacopoeia Expert Committee
on Toxicology and Biocompatibility. He is also the immediate past
president of the Society of Toxicology.
