Cincinnati--Four women from the University of Cincinnati (UC)
College of Nursing received a $20,000 award from the Office of Women's
Health in Indiana, Indiana Department of Health and the Indiana
Commission for Women, to promote breast cancer screening in Dearborn,
Franklin, Ohio and Ripley counties in Indiana.
Associate
Professor Adrianne Lane, EdD, Adjunct Instructor Judy Uhler, MSN,
Professor Madeleine Martin, EdD, and Associate Professor M. Linda
Workman, PhD, were the recipients of the grant and worked with county
health department nurses in two phases. During phase one, the project
faculty distributed breast examination models to each health department
for future educational programs and presented a four-hour workshop on
breast cancer screenings and risk factors to eight county health
nurses. One-hour programs on breast cancer risk factors and screening
were given to women in each of the four counties during phase two. The
grant also provided funds for 20 women in each county to receive free
mammograms and educational materials.
In addition to promoting
better breast cancer screening practices, these nurses worked to
promote greater interaction between women in the community and their
county health nurses, and between the UC College of Nursing faculty and
the community nurses. Through the Indiana Women's Health Mini Grant
Program, these agencies fund projects that will stimulate and motivate
women of all ages to assess their lifestyles and make positive changes
that will help to prevent disease. It also increased the resources of
the county health departments for the following Indiana counties:
Dearborn, Franklin, Ohio, and Ripley.
