Diabetes Conference October 12

Cincinnati--The conference, "Taking Control of Your Diabetes" is scheduled for October 12 at the Cincinnati Convention Center. The University of Cincinnati (UC) College of Medicine, Cincinnati Childrenıs Hospital Medical Center (CCHMC) and a non-profit educational organization, also named ³Taking Control of Your Diabetes² (TCOYD) are jointly sponsoring a patient-oriented educational conference at the Cincinnati Convention Center.

The goal of this conference is to educate and motivate people with diabetes and their loved ones to take an active role in their condition, in order to live healthier and happier lives. During the day, speakers will address topics such as diet, exercise, psychosocial barriers to good control, legal aspects of living with diabetes, carb counting, the glycemic index of foods, avoiding the insulin/sugar roller coaster, recognizing hypoglycemia, new medications and islet cell transplants as treatments for diabetes.

The conference targets adolescents, parents and adults living with diabetes. The majority of the speakers have diabetes themselves, are nationally known for their efforts in patient education and are seasoned speakers. The conference may provide participants with the tools needed to face the challenges of living with diabetes daily. Free, onsite care for children (ages 3-12) is available for participants.

Living with diabetes themselves, many of these speakers have a great deal of insight into how diabetes has shaped their personal and professional lives. The morning features nationally recognized speakers followed by a luncheon and then afternoon workshops led by national and local experts. There will be opportunities to discuss specific questions one on one with a diabetes healthcare provider as well as a health fair to learn about resources available in the Greater Cincinnati area that are important to diabetics.

The Cincinnati TCOYD Conference was organized with the joint efforts of Tammy DiMuzio, RN, MS, CDE, of Cincinnati Children's and Barbara Ramlo-Halsted, MD, of the UC College of Medicine. Cost of the full day conference is $25. To register, call 1-800-998-2693. CCHMC families may register locally by calling Margie Schnelle, at (513) 636-6910.
