Physician Invited to Speak at Surgeon General's Workshop

Cincinnati--Nelson B. Watts, MD, FACE, professor of medicine, University of Cincinnati (UC) College of Medicine, has been invited to speak as a panelist at the Surgeon General's Workshop on Osteoporosis and Bone Health. The meeting will be held on December 12, from 7 a.m. - 6 p.m. and on December 13, from 7 a.m. until noon at The Westin Grand, 2350 M Street, NW, Washington, DC. Dr. Watts was recently elected president of the American College of Endocrinology (ACE) at the 11th Annual Meeting of the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists (AACE) in Chicago, Ill. Dr. Watts is director of the University of Cincinnati Bone Health and Osteoporosis Center. He is also a Fellow of the American College of Endocrinology (FACE) and a Fellow of the American College of Physicians (FACP).

Dr. Watts received his undergraduate and medical degrees from University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, completed a medical internship at Eugene Talmadge Memorial Hospital, a residency in internal medicine at Charlotte Memorial Hospital and a fellowship in endocrinology at North Carolina Memorial Hospital. He practiced clinical endocrinology in his hometown of Asheville, N.C. from 1972-1983 and was on the faculty of Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta, Ga. from 1983-2001. He is certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine in internal medicine and the subspecialty of endocrinology and metabolism.

His major research interest is in osteoporosis, particularly the study of therapeutic agents and tests for diagnosis and monitoring. He also serves as president of the International Society of Clinical Densitometry, and is active in several other professional societies including the American Society for Bone and Mineral Research, the International Osteoporosis Foundation and the National Osteoporosis Foundation.

Dr. Watts has contributed to more than 50 books and book chapters and more than 200 abstracts and articles in such journals as Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA), the New England Journal of Medicine, Bone and Archives of Internal Medicine. He has served as associate editor of Endocrine Practice and Diabetes, on the editorial board of the Journal of Clinical Densitometry, and is a reviewer for numerous medical journals. He is listed in The Best Doctors in America and America's Top Doctors.
