Eye Researcher Receives National Award

Cincinnati--Winston W-Y Kao, PhD, of the University of Cincinnati (UC) College of Medicine, has been granted a $65,000 Senior Scientific Investigator Award by Research to Prevent Blindness (RPB). RPB-Senior Scientific Investigator Awards support nationally recognized senior scientists conducting eye research at medical institutions in the United States. Dr. Kao is one of 122 scientists at 50 institutions so honored since the award was established in 1987.

James J. Augsburger, MD, professor and chairman of the Department of Ophthalmology at the UC College of Medicine, hailed Dr. Kao as an outstanding basic scientist who has advanced the field of eye research greatly during his 20 years as a faculty member and Director of the Ophthalmic Research Laboratory at UC. Dr. Kao's principal field of research expertise is disorders and diseases of the cornea. He is currently studying several gene defects causing impaired corneal wound healing and investigating gene replacement strategies to correct those disorders.

RPB is the world's leading voluntary organization supporting eye research. Since it was founded in 1960, RPB has channeled hundreds of millions of dollars to medical institutions for research into the causes, treatment and prevention of blinding eye diseases.
