UC College of Nursing Students Review Health Projects in Three Communities

Three grants of $4,000 each will be awarded to non-profit organizations that provide health-related services to residents in Price Hill, East End and the city of Hamilton.  A unique program, made possible by funding from The Health Foundation of Greater Cincinnati, will provide senior nursing students at the University of Cincinnati (UC) College of Nursing with the opportunity to apply concepts from their community health nursing course to the improvement of health problems in the three communities.

In preparation for grant proposal submissions, the students completed community assessments to determine three health-related priorities of each of the eligible communities.  Grant award winners will have proposed a project that addresses one of the health-related problems for their community.  The specified health-related priorities are listed below:

East End
-Mental and Behavioral Health
-Improving Community Based Prevention Activities
-Community Nutritional Awareness
Price Hill
-Health Education
-Oral Health/Dental
-Safety
Hamilton                                                                                                                                                   -Smoking
-Teen Pregnancy
-Substance Abuse

Requests for proposals were sent to non-profit organization administrators in the three communities at the end of April.  All grant proposals must be received for review by May 22, 2003. Award winners will be notified by May 27, and will receive their award during a ceremony on June 3.  Any non-profit agencies providing health-related services in the East End, Price Hill or the city of Hamilton that did not receive an application, and would like one, should contact Mariann Lovell, RN, PhD, assistant professor, UC College of Nursing, at (513) 558-5230 or mariann.lovell@uc.edu.
