Radiologists Named Board Trustees

UC Health radiologists Lane Donnelly, MD, and Mary Mahoney, MD, have been selected to serve as American Board of Radiology (ABR) trustees. Selection is considered one of the highest honors bestowed upon a radiologist. The ABR consists of 15 diagnostic radiologists, six radiation oncologists and three radiologic physicists. Donnelly and Mahoney join UC Health radiologist Stephen Thomas, PhD, who serves as the ABR associate executive director for radiologic physics. Another UC Health radiologist, Janet Strife, MD, recently retired as an ABR trustee and the assistant executive director for maintenance of certification.

Tschöp to Receive NIDDK Scholar Award

Obesity researcher Matthias Tschöp, MD, has been selected by the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to receive the NIDDK 60th Anniversary Early Career Investigator/Scholar Award, 2010. Twelve scientists whose work exemplifies excellence in medical research funded or supported by the NIDDK were selected for this honor and Tschöp was selected as the recipient for the field of obesity research. Tschöp will present his research on the NIH Bethesda, Md., campus at the Sept. 21 scientific symposium "Unlocking the Secrets of Science: Building the Foundation for Future Advances.”

Research Week Kicks Off Today

Today marks the start of UC Health University Hospital’s first-ever Research Week, April 26-30. Throughout the week there will be presentations and demonstrations highlighting the scope of clinical research being conducted at the hospital. Displays featuring current and ongoing studies as well as opportunities for involvement will be featured daily from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the corridor outside the hospital cafeteria. In addition, from 1 to 2 p.m. each day in cafeteria meeting rooms A-D, there will be panel discussions focusing on cardiovascular research, the neurosciences, diabetes and obesity, surgery and services of the Center for Clinical and Translational Science and Training. Thakar Selected to Speak at Board Review Course

Charuhas Thakar, MD, associate professor of medicine in the nephrology and hypertension division, has been invited to serve as a faculty speaker for the American Society of Nephrology’s board review course and update to be held in San Francisco this summer. This is the primary preparatory course for the American Board of Internal Medicine's initial certification and maintenance of certification examinations in nephrology, and is considered the premier comprehensive educational update for practicing nephrologists. He will join other selected national and international faculty in addressing topics related to their clinical and research expertise.

Samuel Waxman, MD, distinguished service professor and Albert A. and Vera G. Hematology Oncology Grand Rounds April 30

Isaiah Fidler, DVM, PhD, director of cancer biology at the Cancer Metastasis Research Center in Houston, will deliver, "The Biology and Therapy of Brain Metastases” at 8 a.m. Friday, April 30, in Medical Sciences Building Room 2351. Fidler is also the R.E. Bob Smith Distinguished Chair in Cell Biology and professor of cancer biology at the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, and an adjunct professor of cancer biology at the University of Texas Health Science Center. Molecular Genetics, Biochemistry and Microbiology Seminar May 4

Doctoral students Brad Vander Wielen and Tara Rindler will give presentations at the department of molecular genetics, biochemistry and microbiology seminar at 12:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 4, in Medical Sciences Building Room 2351. Wielen’s topic is, "Characterization of the Notch Signaling Corepressor: MINT." Rindler will discuss, "The Tissue Specific Role of the Na, K ATPase Alpha 2 Isoform in ACTH-Induced Hypertension."
