Diwan Wins National Award for Cardiovascular Research
Abhinav Diwan, MD, of the cardiovascular diseases division, has won the Jeremiah Stamler Distinguished Young Investigator Award for best presentation in the junior faculty category at the Northwestern Cardiovascular Young Investigators Forum held Oct. 25-28 in Chicago. The $10,000 research award recognizes young investigators for their excellence, commitment and promise in the field of cardiovascular research. Diwan will use the grant to further his cardiovascular research at UC.

CancerCenter Named Breast Imaging ‘Center of Excellence’
The UC Barrett Cancer Center at University Hospital has been designated as a Breast Imaging Center of Excellence by the American College of Radiology (ACR). The Barrett Cancer Center is the only provider in Greater Cincinnati to earn this accolade. To receive designation, a center must be fully accredited by ACR in mammography (or a U.S. Food and Drug Administration-approved state accrediting body), stereotactic breast biopsy and breast ultrasound, including the ultrasound-guided breast biopsy. Mary Mahoney, MD, professor of radiology, serves as medical director for the imaging center.


Hutton Lectureship Today at Noon
A nationally acclaimed physician-author who says creative writing can improve a doctor’s clinical skills will deliver the 2007 Hutton Lectureship in Ethics. Abraham Verghese, MD, will discuss “The Pen and the Stethoscope—How Literature Informs Medicine,” today at noon in Kresge Auditorium. Verghese directs the Center for Medical Humanities and Ethics and is the Joaquin Cigarroa Jr. Chair and Marvin Forland Distinguished Professor of Medicine at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. Cancer Rehabilitation Talk
Local physicians will discuss cancer rehabilitation—considered the missing link in the care of cancer survivors—from 8:30 a.m. to noon Wednesday, Nov. 28, in University Hospital Room 1457A. The event will be led by UC’s Elizabeth Shaughnessy, MD, PhD, Beverly Reigle, PhD, and Carolyn Nickol, and Karen Wonders, PhD, of Wright State University. The speakers will explain how a comprehensive rehabilitation program can prevent functional limitations, address recurrence factors and promote quality of life. State of Research at UC
Sandra Degen, PhD, vice president for research, will present 2007 research data and highlights on Thursday, Dec. 6, in Rieveschl Auditorium. The presentation will be repeated on Friday, Dec. 7, in the Varsity Village Lindner Center Room 450. Both events begin at 2 p.m. All are welcome to attend.
