UC Awarded Tech Transfer Funds UC has been awarded $54,000 from the Technology Commercialization Incentive Program led by the Ohio Board of Regents. The Technology Commercialization Incentive Program rewards public and private colleges and universities for successful technology transfer to Ohio-based business and industry resulting in the commercialization of new products, processes and services, and the establishment of new business start-ups within the state. Of the 16 institutions ranked for funding, UC placed fourth. In 2007, UC brought in $582,000 in royalty income and had 111 invention disclosures, 56 patent applications, 13 patents issued and one start-up company. Cancer Development Director Named Kathryn Cascella has been named director of development for the joint cancer program, a collaborative initiative involving the College of Medicine, Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center and University Hospital. In this newly created position, Cascella will be responsible for identifying and cultivating major gift prospects for cancer-related initiatives within the joint cancer program. Cascella most recently served as director of finance for the Hamilton County Republican Party, increasing donations to the party by more than 200 percent during her four-year tenure. She also handled development and fundraising for Ohio’s Future Political Action Committee, a program that focuses on pro-growth solutions for the state's economic problems. Prior to her work at the Hamilton County Republican Party, Cascella served from 2002–05 as vice president of sales for Living Longer ProActive Health where she was responsible for business development, and consequently increased revenue by 300 percent. Dean's Bridge Funding Recipients Named Four faculty members have been named sixth-round winners of research support funding from the Dean's Bridge Funding awards. The recipients are Susan Waltz, PhD, surgery; Jagjit Yadav, PhD, environmental health; Mark Rance, PhD, molecular genetics; and Peter Stambrook, PhD, cancer and cell biology. Awards ranged from $60,000 to $30,000. The date for the next round of applications will be announced in the fall. The Bridge Funding Program was set up to provide short-term, bridge-funding for established and productive College of Medicine researchers who have priority scores on pending grant applications that are close to being funded. Nguyen Named National Poster Winner Douglas Nguyen, MD, a recent medical student graduate, was named a poster winner among 70 national finalists at the National American College of Physicians Meeting held in Washington, D.C., in May. Nguyen was recognized for his project entitled, “Correlation of the Asthma Control Test With Exhaled Nitric Oxide.” He was mentored by Jonathan Bernstein, MD, of the immunology division.

Midwest Regional Brain Tumor Conference The 2008 Midwest Regional Brain Tumor Conference will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, June 28, at the Sheraton Cincinnati North Hotel in Sharonville. The program is designed to educate and support patients, caregivers and family members.
