Williams Named New UC President
Gregory Williams, president of the City College of New York, has been named the 27th president of UC. Williams has earned five degrees, including a JD and a PhD from George Washington University. He has been a university administrator for more than 30 years, serving in a variety of posts at George Washington University, the University of Iowa and Ohio State University. Immediately prior to becoming president of City College, he was dean of the law school and the Carter C. Kissell Professor of Law at Ohio State University. He will take office Nov. 1.

UC Health Partners With Cardiac Surgical Patient Care
UC Health has partnered with Cardiac, Vascular and Thoracic Surgeons, Inc. (CVTS)—the Tristate’s leading community-based cardiac surgical practice—to help advance heart disease care in Greater Cincinnati. Michael Edwards, MD, professor and chair of surgery, and Russ Vester, MD, College of Medicine alumnus, senior cardiac surgeon and chair of the board with CVTS, crafted the partnership, which became official Sept. 8.

Smith Named Interim Director of Cardiac Surgery
J. Michael Smith, MD, a leading pioneer of robotic assisted cardiac surgery, has been named interim director of the UC’s cardiac surgery division. Smith received his medical degree at the University of Louisville and completed residencies at Yale-New Haven Hospital and Good Samaritan Hospital in Cincinnati, where he will continue to serve in addition to UC. He is part of Cardiac, Vascular and Thoracic Surgeons, Inc., which just partnered with UC to improve cardiac care in the Tristate.

Szaflarski Named Medical Director of PNRC
Jerzy Szaflarski, MD, PhD, has accepted a part-time appointment as medical director of the Pediatric Neuroimaging Research Consortium (PNRC) at Cincinnati Children’s Research Foundation. Szaflarski holds a full-time appointment at the College of Medicine as associate professor of neurology and associate director of the Center for Imaging Research. The PNRC comprises primary faculty from pediatric radiology, neurology, neurosurgery and biostatistics and affiliated faculty from several divisions of pediatrics at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center. Scott Holland, PhD, is the PRNC director.

Tew Wins Excellence Award
John Tew, MD, professor of neurosurgery and clinical director of the UC Neuroscience Institute, was presented with the Medical Professional Excellence Award at the 2009 Acoustic Neuroma Association Conference, held Aug.14–16 in Chicago. Tew, co-chair of the association's medical advisory board, was honored for his many years of service to acoustic neuroma patients.

Child Health Insurance Program Webinar Sept. 15
Child health care expert Lisa Simpson, professor of pediatrics, will discuss the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) during a free Webinar at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 15. Simpson, also the director of the Child Policy Research Center at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center, will be joined by Jocelyn Guyer, of the Georgetown Center for Children and Families, and Catherine Hess, of the National Academy for State Health Policy (NASHP), in a discussion on the key features of the new legislation and ways to optimize its implementation. The Webinar is cosponsored by NASHP, the Association of Maternal and Child Health Programs and the National Initiative for Children's Healthcare Quality.
