Funding Opportunity in Digestive Diseases
The Digestive Health Center (DHC) is accepting applications for pilot projects to conduct basic, translational and patient-based or outcomes research broadly relating to pediatric digestive disease. Applications will be considered in all areas of digestive disease research with particular emphasis on the following DHC research themes: chronic liver disease; digestive organ failure and transplantation; inflammatory and diarrheal diseases; and obesity. The deadline for submission is 5 p.m. Monday, Dec. 7. The DHC, based at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center, is one of only 16 Silvio O. Conte Digestive Diseases Research Core Centers in the nation supported by the National Institutes of Diabetes & Digestive & Kidney Diseases. Kotb Named to National Academy of Science Committee
Malak Kotb, PhD, chair of molecular genetics, biochemistry and microbiology, has been selected to serve on a 10-member National Academy of Sciences committee to evaluate animal models for assessing countermeasures to bioterrorism agents. The committee will advise the U.S. Department of Defense on the best scientific and technical approaches to improve preparedness in the face of pandemics and major biological threats.


Lurie Psychiatric Lecture Series Nov. 18
Dilip Jeste, MD, of the University of California San Diego (UCSD), is the featured speaker for the Lurie Psychiatric Lecture Series at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 18, at the Stetson Building Room 2108. His topic is “Successful Aging: Implications for Science, Health Care and Public Policy.” Jeste is Estelle and Edgar Levi Chair in Aging, director of the Sam and Rose Stein Institute for Research on Aging and distinguished professor of psychiatry and neurosciences at UCSD.
