Pharmacy Students Hold Proudly Pennies Blood Drive

Students at the James L. Winkle College of Pharmacy clearly meant business when they posted flyers for their May 18 combined Hoxworth blood drive and Proudly Pennies fundraiser that stated: "We’re going to bleed you for everything we can get today.”
And they did, collecting 33 units of red blood cells for Hoxworth Blood Center and handfuls of change for Penny Wars, a week-long competition among all UC colleges to raise funds for Proudly Pennies, the student-led initiative that seeks to collect 1 billion pennies, the equivalent of $10 million.
The blood drive was a success for the college, with double the number of donors from last year. Thirty-nine people registered at the blood drive, 14 of whom were first-time blood donors.
"For every unit collected, up to three lives could be saved—and with 33 units that could be 99 lives,” said Hoxworth representative Alicia Lipton.
