Thomas Named GRI Interim Director

George Thomas, PhD, UC professor of genome science and deputy director of the Genome Research Institute (GRI), has been named interim director of the GRI and interim chair of the Department of Genome Science, effective Sept. 1. In addition, Ray Takigiku, PhD, director of discovery core technologies at Procter & Gamble Pharmaceuticals (P&GP), has been named interim co-director of the GRI.

Dr. Thomas joined UC's College of Medicine faculty in January from the Friedrich Miescher Institute for Biomedical Research in Basel, Switzerland. One of the world's foremost molecular biologists, Dr. Thomas and his laboratory have contributed significant discoveries in diabetes, obesity and cancer. Dr. Takigiku, who also has been named adjunct professor of genome science at UC, has nearly 20 years in various leadership positions at P&GP.
