Medicine, Pharmacy Join Together to Provide Care
Published November 2003
The volunteer groups from the College of Medicine and
the College of Pharmacy, MedVoUC and PharmTOC, have joined together to
provide acute medical care to the residents of the Drop Inn Shelter in
Over the Rhine. The volunteers, all students, treat approximately 30
patients each week. Many are seen for pneumonia and other respiratory
infections in the winter months. Students also perform routine
procedures such as blood glucose checks and blood pressure checks. Flu
vaccines are also given when available. This program, which began
October 2, runs each Thursday night through March.
"This is a unique collaboration between the College of
Medicine and the College of Pharmacy," said Bethanne Brown, RPh,
visiting instructor of clinical practice at the UC College of Pharmacy.
"This opportunity allows pharmacy students and medical students to
begin interacting at the early stages of their careers to allow a
better understanding of individual professions as well as improve
communication between the professions, now and in the future."
