Hoxworth Appoints Director of Research

Jose A. Cancelas, MD, PhD, is the new director of the Research Division of Hoxworth Blood Center. Dr. Cancelas has dedicated the last 12 years to the study of hematopoiesis and stem cell biology. Beginning in June 2001, Dr. Cancelas worked as a research associate in the Division of Experimental Hematology, Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center. In October of 2002, he became a Blood Banking and Transfusion Medicine fellow at Hoxworth Blood Center.

His work during these years has been focused on the analysis of the mechanisms that regulate the stem cell proliferation, differentiation and mobilization. His position will be in collaboration with the Department of Experimental Hematology in Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center where he received a faculty appointment.

In collaboration with Tom Leemhuis, PhD, of Hoxworth’s Cell Therapy Division and David Williams, MD of Cincinnati Children’s/Division of Experimental Hematology, Dr. Cancelas’ aim is to apply the basic knowledge on stem cell biology for its use for clinical applications in the therapy of degenerative diseases, cancer and immunodeficiencies.
