Students Provide Free Medical Screenings and Health Information

Published November 2006

UC pharmacy students hosted a health fair Oct. 26 at the downtown Public Library of Cincinnati and Hamilton County in honor of American Pharmacists Month.

Twenty five students offered blood glucose screenings, blood pressure checks, screening for heartburn and flu vaccination.

An estimated 20 million people have diabetes and 6 million of them don’t even know it. Of the nearly 50 people who were screened for diabetes, two had the disease and several were pre-diabetic. The screening allowed people to be aware they had the disease so they could take steps to manage their blood glucose levels.

Students also distributed more than 250 informational handouts on immunizations, lifestyle changes that optimize cardiovascular health and the new HPV vaccine (cervical cancer vaccine).

In addition, the library offered a display of health-related books for patrons to borrow and licensed pharmacists answered questions about safe and effective use of medications.
