Jesi Stracham has made it her goal to live life to the fullest after suffering a spinal cord injury from a motorcycle accident in 2015, which left her paralyzed from the chest down. Now, she’s inspiring others as the keynote speaker at the fourth annual UC Health Spinal Cord Injury (SCI) Expo on Saturday, Sept 8. 2018, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., at the Daniel Drake Center for Post-Acute Care. This free event will offer networking opportunities for the SCI community, along with educational presentations from spine experts and booths from more than 30 services, resources and products.
An adventure seeker prior to her injury, Stracham founded the Wheel With Me Foundation and has continued to pursue adventures as an adaptive athlete, competing in Tough Mudder events and returning to her love of racing all-terrain vehicles (ATVs) in GNCC competitions.
Stracham will speak from 11 a.m. to noon.
Angela Stillwagon, DO, expo organizer and an assistant professor in the Department of Neurology and Rehabilitation Medicine at the University of Cincinnati (UC) College of Medicine, says the event is not exclusively for those with spinal cord injury. "It may also be useful for people with cerebral palsy, multiple sclerosis, really anyone with mobility issues or functional impairments can attend. Come out and talk to our experts and see some of the products and services available,” she says.
"We want it to be a place where the community can come together and know we’re here to help them—to make them aware of resources that are available in the region.”
Stillwagon says that at Drake, experts offer a monthly multidisciplinary clinic for patients with spinal cord injury. This includes a physician with expertise in physical medicine and rehabilitation as well as UC urology, nursing staff and physical/occupational therapists.
Stillwagon says expo participants will range from wheelchair vendors to adaptive sports groups, both non- and for-profit organizations.
